"Stockpiling for the Future"

Luke 12:13-21

There is a parable in the midst of our scripture passage this week.  Jesus is asked to settle a family dispute and not surprisingly, responds with a parable.  Some might think the parable is about greed, but I invite you to read the passage and think about the transitory nature of life.  What do you hold dear?  Where is your time invested?  Where is your money spent, invested, held?  Where is your heart invested?  How are you being "rich towards God"?  Blessings to you as you reflect on these things.

The Great Adventure

Colossians 1:15-23a

We had an incredible High Seas adventure this week with our VBS kids and volunteers.  We learned about God's great love.  Our scripture passage this week reminds us of the incredible lengths to which God went to show his love.  The Creator of the universe became human in Christ Jesus - giving up his glory in heaven - and offered himself for us.  What great love that He would give his life for us.  We can only begin to understand the implications of that great mystery.  In VBS, we talked about "God sightings".  I invite you all to reflect on how you see God at work (or want to see God at work) around you, in you and through you this week, for we are Christ's body on earth now.  Blessings to you, as you do so!

Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

This is a really cool passage.  We all know how the 12 super students were sent out, but did you know that Jesus sent out 72 people?  He sent them out in pairs to go to the towns and villages before he arrived.  It is possible that women as well as men were sent.  They had a great time!  In fact, this is the only place I can recall where all the people were happy before the resurrection.  Why is that?  Look at their focus.

When we think of Paul the apostle, we think of a mature Christian.  He is after all, the author of so many influential letters to the Christian community.  It is he who wrote things like, “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus”.  Yet at one time he was a horrid man, feared by those who loved Jesus.  How did he change?  Is it really possible to change?
